4.3 - Redox Flashcards
What happens when oxidation/reduction occurs?
Electrons are transferred.
OILRIG
Oxidation is loss of electrons.
Reduction is gain of electrons.
What happens when something is oxidised?
It loses electrons.
What happens when something is reduced?
It gains electrons.
What are reducing agents?
Something that reduces another species.
Loses electrons, so is oxidised.
What are oxidising agents?
Something that oxidises another species.
Gains electrons, so is reduced.
Oxidation number of uncombined element
0
Oxidation number of Group 1
always +1
Oxidation number of Group 2
always +2
Oxidation number of Aluminium
always +3
Oxidation number of Flourine
always -1
Oxidation number of Flourine

Oxidation number of Hydrogen
+1 (unless in hydrides e.g. NaH)
Oxidation number of Chlorine
-1 (unless in a compound with F or O)
Oxidation number of Oxygen
