11.4 - Isomerism (definitions) Flashcards
1
Q
What is structural isomerism?
A
Structural isomers are compounds with the same molecular formula but different structural formula.
2
Q
Structural isomers - functional group
A
In compounds containing a functional group, the functional group can be at different positions along the carbon chain.
3
Q
Structural isomers - different functional groups
A
Sometimes two molecules containing different functional groups have the same molecular formula e.g. aldehydes and ketones.
