What are lifestyle choices?
The choices we make about how we live and behave that impact on our health

.Will help you lose weight, if overweight, or maintain a healthy weight
What are the effects of eating an unhealthy diet?
.Leads to deficiencies in essential nutrients and causes health conditions, such as osteoporosis and rickets, as well as fatigue and muscle weakness
.Leads to an increase in weight and body fat, which puts you at risk of developing health conditions, such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and stroke
.Can affect your concentration levels and make you feel lethargic, making it more difficult to find energy to exercise
.Can affect your quality of sleep
.Can cause you to feel guilty and depressed, especially if you overeat

.Increases risk of disease
.Increases your risk of low self esteem, anxiety + depression
.Decreases muscle mass, overall strength and energy levels, making daily tasks such as carrying shopping bags more difficult
What is a balanced life?
When you work hard but also have enough time to rest and to sleep
What are the effects of a good work/rest/sleep balance?
.Improves your physical, emotional and social health
.Makes you feel more in control of your life, helping to reduce stress and making you more effective in all areas of your life. You are more productive at work, are better at making good decisions and form stronger and longer-lasting relationships
What are the effects of a poor work/rest/sleep balance?
.Increased risk of depression
.Lead to weight gain
.Increase your risk of illness and disease, including your risk of high blood pressure and heart disease
.Increase stress + anxiety
.Lead to drinking more alcohol and smoking more cigarettes
.Result in poor-quality sleep
What are recreational drugs?
Drugs that are taken for pleasure rather than for medical reasons. Many are illegal such as heroin
What are the effects of consuming alcohol?
.Can lead to dehydration because alcohol is a diuretic. It makes the kidneys produce more urine and reduces the amount of water in your body, upsetting the delicate balance of minerals and affecting the way your body functions
.Reduces your cardiovascular fitness and muscular endurance. While it focuses on breaking down the alcohol you have drunk, the liver cannot produce as much glucose as it would normally. Glucose is used as a fuel in energy production, so less glucose means that you will have less energy
.Makes the nerve cells in your brain less excited and slows them down. This in turn affects many things, including coordination, concentration and reaction time
.Can lead to weight gain because alcohol is high in sugar and calories
.Disrupts sleep pattern, decreasing the release of human growth hormone and slowing the body’s ability to heal itself
.Can lead to liver damage and mental-health conditions, such as addiction, depression and, in the long term, memory loss
What are the effects of smoking?
.Makes you feel tired faster. When you smoke a cigarette your cardiovascular and respiratory systems are unable to work efficiently, and they are unable to carry as much oxygen around the body as they normally would. This is because nicotine constructs the blood vessels and the carbon monoxide in the smoke makes it more difficult for the already limited supply of blood to carry oxygen
.Increases your risk of disease, including lung cancer, bronchitis, pneumonia and emphysema
.Leads to addiction. Nicotine is a highly addictive drug and regular smokers find it very difficult to stop
.Causes harm to those around you, who breathe in the smoke by passive smoking
