What is fitness?
The ability to meet the demands of the environment
List positive health effects of being fit
.You can maintain optimum weight
.Your risk of developing diseases such as heart disease, high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes is reduced
.Your cardio-respiratory system works efficiently so you are able to perform daily task quickly and easily
.You feel happier and more confident, with a more positive body image
.You fall asleep faster and get better quality sleep
.You are able to recover from exercise, illness and injury more quickly
What are the negative health effects of being fit?
.Exercising can become addictive leading to overtraining
.Focusing too much on body shape can cause body dysmorphia
.Too much training can damage the joints and cause overuse injuries, such as tennis and golfers elbow. Long term it can cause osteoarthritis or osteoporosis
.Training too much and not giving your body enough time to rest and recover between sessions can lead to an increase in soft tissues injuries because soft tissues are not given enough time to repair properly
What is the importance of a well designed PEP?
Helps harness all positive health effects of being fit while avoiding the negative health effects.
What are the 4 stages to a PEP?
- Designing a PEP. To ensure you gain maximum health benefit from a PEP is critical that it is suited to your individual needs
- Carrying out the PEP . You have to stick to the PEP
- Monitoring a PEP . Helpful to monitor your PEP so you can make small changes - helping you achieve your goals
- Evaluating a PEP . Consider progress you’ve made so next PEP is even better so you continue to benefit from positive health effects
