4.2.1 Cranial Nerves and the CNS Flashcards
What do the cranial nerves supply?
Supplying tissues and structures of the head and neck region including special sense organs
What part of the nervous system are cranial nerves part of?
Peripheral, not I and II they are continuations of the forebrain and thus are part of the CNS
How do cranial nerves arise?
Arise as pairs
What are most cranial nerves associated with?
Associated with the brainstem, this is the location of their nuclei
What are the different types of fibres that cranial nerves have?
Sensory
Motor
Parasympathetic
Mix of all or some
Where can cranial nerves be injured?
- During its route outside of the CNS
- Brainstem
- Neurones within forebrain/brainstem which connect other parts of brain to cranial nerves
How many cranial nerves are from each region of the brain?
2 CN arise from forebrain
I, II
2 CN arise from midbrain
III, IV
4 CN arise from pons
V, VI, VII, VIII
4 CN arise from medulla
IX, X, XI, XII
2244
