2.2.3 Venous Drainage of the Head and Neck Flashcards
What is the drainage of the scalp to the EJV?
- Retromandibular vein
- Occipital vein
- Posterior auricular vein
- External jugular vein
- Superficial temporal vein
Ropes
What is the drainage of the scalp to the IJV?
- Supraorbital and Supratrochlear
- Facial Vein
- Internal Jugular Vein
Where do the EJV and IJV drain into?
Subclavian Vein
How can the scalp be drained?
Scalp drains via emissary veins through skull into dural venous sinuses
Risk of infection as brain structures also drain into dural venous sinuses
Can track to brain
What is the venous drainage of the face?
- Supraorbital
- Supratrochlear
- Angular
- Facial
- Common Facial
- IJV
What drains into the cavernous sinus?
Superior and inferior opthalmic veins
Risk of infection to intracranial cavity as directly connected
What drains into the pterygoid venous plexus?
Facial vein
Deep Facial Veins
How are the pterygoid venous plexus and cavernous sinus connected?
Connected by a venous network
What is the danger triangle of the face?
Region where facial vein can drain backwards into cavernous sinus
Infections in that are can spread by facial vein and end up in dural venous sinuses

What vein are we looking at when measuring Jugular Venous Pressure (JVP)?
Internal Jugular Vein, external pulsates DO NOT USE EXTERNAL
How is JVP measured?
Use the right IJV
* Patient at 45 degrees
* Head turned slightly to the left
* IJV obscured by SCM, look for pulsations through muscle
* Measure height from sternal angle and add 5cm
Gives estimate of right atrial pressure in cmH2O
