2.1.3 Organisation of Cervical Lymph Nodes and Tissues Drained Flashcards
Where are superficial cervical lymph nodes found?
Superficial cervical fascia,
(continuous with fascia of face just beneath skin)
Where do you find deep cervical lymph nodes?
Deeper within the neck
Associated with IJV, usually (not always) located along its length, in the sheath
What do deep cervical lymph nodes drain?
Directly drain deeper tissues within neck
Thyroid, larynx, trachea, pharynx and oesophagus
Superficial lymph nodes
What do superifical lymph nodes draining the head form?
Ring from chin to occiput
What are the superficial lymph nodes of the head?
- Submental
- Submandibular
- Pre-auricular & parotid
- Post auricular
- Occipital
What are the superficial lymph nodes of the neck?
Superficial nodes in neck associated with route of EJV or AJV: superficial to SCM
- Superficial cervical: EJV
- Posterior cervical: EJV
- Anterior cervical: AJV
What do superficial lymphnodes do?
Drain tissues of face and scalp before draining into deep lymph nodes
What do occipital lymph nodes drain?
Posterior Scalp
Where do post-auricular lymph nodes drain?
Posterolateral half of scalp
Where do Pre-auricular & parotid lymph nodes drain?
Anterolateral scalp
What do Submandibular lymph nodes drain?
Centre of the face & cheek
Teeth and gingivae
Parts of anterior tongue
What do Submental lymph nodes drain?
Inferior and posterior chin
Floor of mouth
Tip of tongue
Lower incisor teeth & gums
What is the tongue’s lymphatic drainage?
Posterior 1/3 drains to deep cervical nodes
Tip of tonuge drains to submental nodes draw a line down from area of tongue and the nodes it hits is basically where it drains to
Use picture
What structures drain directly to deep cervical lymph nodes?
Thyroid
Posterior 1/3 tongue
What is the relation of the deep lymph nodes to the SCM?
Deep to the SCM, vertical chain closely related to IJV and carotid sheath
