4.1 Climate Change Flashcards
What are 4 effects of climate change?
➢ Many of the world’s glaciers and ice caps are shrinking
➢ Sea levels may rise by 1m by 2100
➢ Some artic habitats may become extinct
➢ Low-lying islands such as the Maldives are under threat from sea-level rise
What is the evidence for climate change?
➢ Fossil records can be used - these are deep ocean sediments and frozen ice cores
➢ Layers of sediment of fresh falls of snow become buried, they trap and preserve evidence of the global temperatures at that time
➢ Scientists can stud the oxygen or the water molecules in the sediments to calculate the temperature
➢ They can be accurately dated and can be used to construct temperature patterns
How are shrinking glaciers and melting ice evidence for climate change?
➢ Shrinking glaciers happen when there is a large amount of temperature surrounding the glaciers
How are rising sea levels evidence for climate change?
➢ When temperatures rise and freshwater ice melts, more water flows to the seas from glaciers and ice caps
