3.1 Global Atmospheric circulation Flashcards
How does high pressure occur in certain regions?
➢ When air sinks towards the ground surface
In which direction does the wind move in areas of high pressure?
➢ Wind on the ground moves outwards
How does low pressure occur in certain regions?
➢ When the air rises from the ground surface
In which direction does the winds moves in areas of low pressure?
➢ Wind on the ground moves outwards
Why does the wind curve around the earth?
➢ Because they move from areas of high pressure to low pressure
Why are some areas usually cloudy and wet?
➢ As the region is close to the boundary of cold polar air and sub-tropical area which makes the boundary between these air masses unstable
Where are areas mostly dry and hot in the desert?
➢ Where air sinks down forming a belt of high pressure
➢ Air doesn’t rise so forms a few clouds - as a result, forms little rain
Why is it cold at night in a desert?
Because the heat is quickly lost from the ground at night
