1.1 Natural hazards Flashcards
What is a natural hazard?
➢ A natural event that has a huge social impact
What is a hazard risk?
➢ The chance or probability of being affected by a natural event
What factors affect hazard risk?
➢ Urbanization
➢ Poverty
➢ Climate change
➢ Farming
How has poverty increased hazard risk?
➢ In poorer areas, a shortage of houses has arisen, this has led to people building on unstable slopes - This means they are prone to hazards such as landslides
How has urbanization increased hazard risk?
➢ Densely populated areas are at increased risk to earthquakes as more people are located in that area
How has climate change increased hazard risk?
➢ A warmer world means the atmosphere will have more energy leading to more violent storms, consequently increasing risk to people
How has farming increased hazard risk?
➢ When a river floods it deposits silt on the floodplain.
➢ This means people are attracted due to the excellent opportunities of farming
➢ However this means more prone to risk from flooding
What are 5 types of natural hazards?
Earthquakes Volcanoes Storms Floods Landslides Tsunamis Drought
