4.1 Berlin 1958-63 Flashcards
By 1958, 3 million east german’s had moved to west germany, why?
East Germans believed West Germany was the best and only Germany
West Germany was also being treated better whereas the East felt like they were getting punished
Khrushchevs Berlin Ultimatum of 1958:
Berlin be demilitarised and Western troops withdrawn
Berlin become a free city with its own independent government (soviet controlled)
What did Khrushchev do after 40,000 germans moved from east to west after the Berlin ultimatum?
Built a wall cutting straight through the centre of Berlin, this was known as the Death strip
The Death strip
Two walls separating east and west Berlin with a ‘no-mans land’ in between filled with booby traps and things used to stop people from crossing
Positive outcome of the Death Strip on the USSR
The wall stopped refugees leaving for the West. The wall shows that communism would survive
Negative outcome of the Death strip on USSR
Khrushchev had to abandon plans to unit germany under soviet control
Positive outcome of the death strip on USA
Khrushchev had been forced to accept Western control in West Berlin
Negative outcome of the death strip on USA
Wall had been built without the consultation of the USA. People wanting to escape communism could no longer do so.
