Segregation
act of separating facilities for coloured and non-coloured people
Segregation in the South
Legal in south due to Jim Crow laws
Discrimination in North
segregation was not legal in the north but people stayed segregated due to discrimination and racism
American Civil war
south fought the north to uphold slavery but they lost
Emancipation Proclamation
Issued by Abraham Lincoln which freed the slaves
After emancipation
South legalised racism through Jim Crow Laws
North had no legal racism but black people had worse jobs and lived in ghettos
Effects of Jim Crow laws
Enforced Segregation in the South
Stopped Black people voting because of poll taxes they couldn’t afford and literacy tests proving them incapable of voting
Violence against Africa-Americans
Black men suspected of crimes attacked my mobs and lynched
Police and judges did nothing as they were also racist
Ku Klux Klan
Set up after American Civil War
Victims beaten brutally and raped or lynched
Very few convicted as police were members of sympathetic
Why congress did little to help black people
Congress needed support of southern politicians who were either racist or didn’t want to upset racist supporters
Why the president did little to support black people
Presidents who may have wanted change did not act to improve civil rights
Why the supreme court did little to support black people
Plessy V Ferguson rules segregation allowed if equal
Supreme court influenced by views of Judges which most were against coloured people
