4.10 Policy:
A. It is one of the objectives of the New York State Unified Court System to
ensure that all uniformed personnel MAINTAIN a neat and clean appearance,
are attired in an AUTHORIZED uniform, and POSSESS and maintain all required
equipment. *

B. As the most visible representatives of the Unified Court System, court officers are required to maintain an alert and professional appearance, manner, and bearing.
4.20 General:
A. Court officers shall at all times, while on duty, wear the uniform and articles of equipment as prescribed in the CORP manual.
All uniforms and equipment must conform with the standards and specifications issued by the Department of Public Safety on behalf of the First Deputy Chief Administrative Judge.*
B. Court officers SHALL NOT wear their uniforms while off-duty EXCEPT:
- to and from work
- during meal breaks
- or as authorized by a superior officer AND the Department of Public Safety.*
4.20 General:
C. Court officers shall maintain their uniforms in a NEAT, CLEAN and SERVICEABLE condition.
E. Inspection of uniforms and equipment will be conducted by supervisory officers AT LEAST TWICE ANNUALLY. Officers will be directed to replace equipment or uniforms no longer meeting standards. Failure by an officer to follow such direction may result in disciplinary action. 🚨
F. When in uniform outdoors, a court officer SHALL wear an approved and appropriate UNIFORM OUTER GARMENT AND CAP. *
G. Neck adornments (e.g., necklaces and chains) must be worn UNDER the
uniform shirt.
H. A court officer, while on duty, shall comply with the following safety and performance requirements:

over the eyebrows or reaches collar.
- The length and bulk of the hair should
not interfere with the wearing of any
uniform headgear.
4.21 Shield and Identification Card:
A. Court officers shall:
B. PROMPTLY REPORT to their supervisor ANY LOST or DAMAGED shield or identification card. Loss of a shield or identification card must also be reported to the police agency where the loss took place.*

possession while on duty. *
F. Surrender the shield and identification card to their supervisor upon:

4.21 Shield and Identification Card:
B. Court officers shall NOT:
- Duplicate or possess a duplicate of the official shield or identification card. *
- Lend, transfer, alter, or purposely damage the official shield or identification
card. *
4.30 Prescribed Uniforms:
A. Class (A) Dress Uniform:
a. Navy blue uniform pants with a black mohair braid 1⁄2 inch wide covering the outer seam. Female officers are permitted, as an option, to wear a navy-blue skirt not more than 1” above or 2” below the knee. *
b. “Navy blue uniform blouse with epaulets, breast pocket flaps, waist pocket flaps, brass buttons with state insignia, authorized uniform patch on each sleeve, collar brass with shield affixed.” *
c. Long sleeve uniform shirt with the authorized patch on each sleeve:
- For all ranks below Sergeant, except as provided in (3), the uniform shirt is a DARK BLUE, military type.
- For the rank of Sergeant and ABOVE, the uniform shirt is a WHITE military type.
d. “Black clip-on tie with authorized tie clasp.”
e. Black socks.
f. Plain-tip black military-type shoes.
g. Black leather garrison-type belt at least 1-1/4” in width with a plain buckle. *
h. Eight-point uniform hat with black strap and appropriate New York State cap device. *
i. White gloves.
- The Dress Uniform MUST be worn on all ceremonial occasions unless otherwise ordered. *
B. Class (B) Winter Uniform:
- The Class (B) Winter Uniform is prescribed as follows:

g. Approved outer jackets.
- N.Y.P.D. Emergency Service Jacket (LONG). *
- Navy blue FINGERTIP LENGTH nylon jacket with epaulets, optional detachable fur collar, breast pocket, gold buttons bearing the New York State seal, slash side pockets, authorized patch on each sleeve, and detachable lining.
- Navy blue WAIST LENGTH, lightweight nylon jacket with epaulets, breast pockets, gold buttons bearing the New York State seal, slash side pockets, and detachable lining, affixed with authorized patch on each sleeve, collar brass, and service stripes.
h. For Sergeants assigned to MSP Units.
- Long sleeve dark blue shirt, military type, polyester/rayon with appropriate patch on left sleeve, collar brass (MSP), and shield properly affixed. The long-sleeved shirt will be worn with a black clip-on tie. The unit patch for MSP must be worn on the RIGHT sleeve.*

C. Class (B) Summer Uniform:

F. Patches, Chevrons, Insignia, Collar Brass, and Service Stripes:
- Service stripes may be worn on the outermost left sleeve of long-sleeve uniform garments, one stripe per 5 years of service. The lower tip of the bottom stripe is to be 4 inches from the bottom of the sleeve. *
- Longevity Bar may be worn over RIGHT breast uniform pocket of short sleeve shirt when the short sleeve shirt is worn as the outmost garment. The bar should be white in color and display gold Roman numeral(s)
depicting the completion of service in FIVE year increments. *
COLLAR BRASS:
OUTER JACKET:
Brass affixed parallel to neckline.
BLOUSE:
Brass affixed 1 1/4” up and in from the collar point and parallel to the ground.
WINTER SHIRT / SUMMER SHIRT:
Centered on collar points 1” from forward edge and affixed parallel to neckline.
4.31 Service Breast Bars and Awards:
B. The order of Breast Bars and Awards shall be from top to bottom as follows:
- 9/11/01 American Flag or other American Flag bar *
- UCS - Medal of Honor
- UCS - Medal of Valor
- UCS - Medal for Distinguished Service
- Association Excellent Service Awards or equivalent
- Association Meritorious Service, Medal of Commendation Award
or equivalent - Association Medical Life Saving Award or equivalent
- Association Unit Citation Award
- Military Service in time of war
- Instructor or other professional certification bar (e.g. Police
Firearms Instructor, EMT) - Official Shield *
- Name Plate *

C. A Longevity Breast Bar may be worn over the right breast pocket of the uniformed shirt when shirt is worn as the outermost garment as part of the Class B uniform. *

D. A 1⁄2-inch wide, black elastic mourning band covering the state seal of the shield may be worn as follows:
- Upon the death of an active-duty officer - line of duty:🚨
a. members of command - for a period of TEN days after his/her death.🚨
b. other members - for the period from death until the end of the day on
which the funeral takes place.
- Upon the death of an active-duty officer - non-line of duty:🚨
a. members of command - on the day of the funeral service.🚨
b. other members - while attending funeral services.
4.35 Protective Vests:
A. Where an authorized protective vest is made available, the vest MUST be worn by all officers as directed.
C. Authorized protective vests must be certified by the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) and reviewed and approved by the Chief of Public Safety. Only authorized vests may be worn on duty. *

4.60 ORDER OF RANK AND RANK INSIGNIA:
A. The order of rank and corresponding rank insignia for the uniformed supervisors of the uniformed force is as follows:
- Chief of Public Safety — 4 Stars
- 1st Deputy Chief — 3 Stars
- Deputy Chief — 3 Stars
- Assistant Chief — 2 Stars
- Assistant Deputy Chief — 1 Stars
- Major — 1 Golden Oak Leaf
- Captain — 2 Gold Gilt Bars
- Lieutenant — 1 Gold Gilt Bar

A special Breast Cancer Awareness Patch is
authorized to be worn for the month of October only.
Uniformed personnel electing to wear the BREAST CANCER AWARENESS patch must affix it to the LEFT shoulder in place of the official NYS Courts patch on any uniform shirt.
