4 structural levels of the body Flashcards
memorise 4 structural levels of the body
what are cells and what do cells do
cells are the basic structural and functional units of all living organisms.
They are specialised to carry out different functions. for example, red blood cells are able to transport oxygen
organs?
They are made up of two or more types of tissues and work together to carry out particular tasks (eg: the heart)
systems?
A group of organs working together to carry out a particular task (eg: the digestive or nervous system)
what are the 4 types of tissues
- Muscular
- Epithelial
- Connective
- Nervous
what are epithelial TISSUES
- cover and line organs
- cells that are made up of epithelium are joined closely together
- eg: Heart and kidney
what are connective TISSUES
- Provide support and holds the body together
- cells aren’t close together (they are separated by large amounts of material called matrix)
- eg: bones and kidney
What are nervous TISSUES
- made up of nerve cells called neurons
- sends nerve signals to the brain and receives signals from the brain
What are the 3 types of muscular tissue
Skeletal, smooth, cardiac
what is skeletal muscle (from muscular tissues)
SKELETAL MUSCLE
- the muscle is straited
- voluntary muscle
- It enables humans to move
- it is any muscle you can control
what is smooth muscle (from muscular tissues)
SMOOTH MUSCLE
- doesn’t have strations
- involuntary muscle
- helps with digestion and nutrient collection
- found in the intestines and uterus
what is cardiac muscle (from muscular tissue)
CARDIAC MUSCLE
- Muscle found in the heart
- When the muscle contracts it pumps the blood.
- involuntary muscle
