- An insider lives in that place, an outsider has never visited the place
- An outsider can mean you live in that place but don’t feel belonged
- For example, an immigrant who does not understand the culture, making them feel excluded

A
- Exogenous factors are the relationships with other places
- Examples include flows of people
- Exogenous factors such as the flows of people change the character of a place
- For example, South Asian migrants in Manchester has created the Curry Mile in Rusholme

Outline how topography can contribute to the character of a place. (4 marks)
A
- Topography - shape of the land and the distribution of its surface features and relationship between them
- Features such as mountains may be made out of specific rock types
- Rocks of mountains can be used to build houses, having a better look and character of the place
- Example: ‘slate villages’ of North Wales are known for houses made of slate, and a cultural connection

Explain the difference between experienced places and media places. (4 marks)
A
- Experienced places are places you have lived/visited before
- Media places are places we know through the media (e.g. TV, the internet)
- Example of a media place: Hogwarts gaining a strong sense of place through the media and experiences are strong
- Example of an experienced place: visiting Melbourne and finding that not every home has a swimming pool
