4 Alcohols Flashcards
What is the suffix for 2 alcohol groups?
Diol
Boiling point trend for alcohols?
Higher melting/ boiling point than similar legnth alkenes/ alkanes as H atom in OH bond can bond with other alcohol groups and water
Are alcohols soluble in water?
Yes.
How can ethanol be produced?
Industrially from ethene
From the fermentation of glucose
Producing ethanol from the fermentation of carbohydrates.
- Uses renewable resources: carbohydrate crops
- Catalyst: Enzymes in yeast
- Conditions: Aqueous, Anaerobic, around 35°c
(anaerobic = no carboxylic acid produced) - Batch Process
- Slow rate of reaction
- Impure ethanol obtained, made pure by fractional distillation
Industrially producing ethanol from ethene
- Uses ethene: finite resource from crude oil
- Catalyst: Phosphoric acid
- Conditions: 300°c, 70 atmospheres
- Continuous process
- Fast rate fo reaction
- Pure ethanol obtained
Equation for producing ethanol from fermentation of glucose.
C₆₁H₂O₆ → 2C₂H₅OH + CO₂
Equation for producing ethanol from ethene
C₆H₁₂O₆ ⇌ 2C₂H₅OH + CO₂
Ethanol as a fuel
- Burns more cleanly than petrol
- Potentially carbon neutral
What does it mean for a process to be carbon neutral?
The process results in no net increase in CO₂ emissions.
