1 Alkenes - combustion pollutants and removal of Flashcards
1
Q
What pollutants are produced from car exhaust fumes?
A
- Carbon Dioxide
- Carbon Monoxide
- Nitrous Oxides
- Volatile organic substances (VOCs)
2
Q
Why is CO harmful?
A
Binds to haemoglobin in red blood cells, preventing carbon dioxide and oxygen from being able to bind. This leads to eventual death and means it is a toxic chemical.
3
Q
Feature of CO
A
- odourless
4
Q
How are nitrous oxides formed?
A
- in high temperatures oxygen from combustion or the air reacts with the nitrogen in the air
5
Q
How is sulfur dioxide formed?
A
- in coal fired power stations, there are sulfur impurities in the coal, reacting with the oxygen at high temperatures
6
Q
What are the issues with nitrous oxides?
A
- it is a component of acid rain
- photochemical smog
7
Q
What is a catalytic converter?
A
- a porcelain honeycomb structure for large surface area, coated in a precious metal catalyst, often platinum
