3 Alkenes - Reactions Flashcards

1
Q

Combustion of alkenes.

A
  • alkenes = burn in air
  • they release less energy per mole than alkanes
  • alkenes are not used for fuel due to their high reactivity, this property makes them useful for other properties

Q

Which carbocation intermediates are the major product and why?

A

Tertiary carbocation intermediates are the major as they are the most stable carbocation intermediate. This is because the alkyl groups (C chain) donate electron density to the positive cation to stabilise it, this is called a positive inductive effect.
