1 Isomerism Flashcards
What are the 2 types of isomerism?
Stereo isomerism and Structural Isomerism
What are the 3 types of Structural isomerism?
- Chain
- Position
- Functional Group
What is chain isomerism?
When the carbon chain is rearranged to create different structures.
What is positional isomerism?
When the functional group changes position.
What is functional group isomerism?
Same molecular formula, different functional group.
What are the 2 types of stereo isomerism?
Geometric and optical isomerism.
What is geometric isomerism?
Isomerism that occurs in alkenes due to their restricted rotation surrounding C C double bonds, meaning they are fixed in position and cannot rotate.
What are the 2 types of Geometric isomers.
E isomers and Z isomers.
What is stereo isomerism?
When molecules have the same structural formula but the atoms have a different arrangement in 3D space.
What is structural isomerism?
When molecules have the same molecular formula but a different arrangement of atoms.
