3.Varibles affecting obedience(Milgram) Flashcards
What are the 3 variables affecting obedience?
Proximity,location and power of uniform
What does proximity mean?
How near or far the ppt (teacher) is to the victim (learner) or experiment (authority figure)
What was proximity like in Milgrams original experiment?
T could not see the L so obedience was 65% but when T and L was in the same room obedience was 40% because the T could see how their behaviour was affecting the L
When the T was required to force the L hand on the electric shock plate what did obedience drop to?
30%
In another variation, when the experimenter left the room and gave instruction by phone what did obedience drop to?
20.5%, suggesting the closer an authority figure is to a person the more obedient the person will be
What happened with location in Milgrams original experiment?
The original was taken place in a prestigious uni (Yale) so Milgram wanted to test what would happen to obedience when location was changed
What happened when the location was changed?
When location was changed to a rundown office in a rundown part of town obedience fell to 48% from 65%
Why did Milgram think obedience dropped in a different location to the original experiment?
because perceived authority was reduced
Power of uniform- what can wearing a uniform give off?
The perception of authority
What did the authority figure (experimenter) wear in Milgrams original experiment?
A grey lab coat giving him perceived authority
What did Milgram do in a variation to investigate power of uniform?
Experimenter was called away from the experiment to answer the phone, the experiment was taken over by a normal person wearing normal clothes
When investigating power of uniform and the normal person in normal clothes took over, what did obedience drop to?
20% suggesting uniform acts as a visual of authority and when not in uniform the perceived authority is reduced
