3c Cells & Tissues & Membranes Flashcards
Diffusion
A passive transport. Particles from HIGH to LOW concentration
Osmosis
A passive transport.
Water goes
FROM LOW (solute) (but HIGH water)
TO
HIGH (solute) and LOW water.
Filtration
Passive transport.
WATER & solutes move through membrane b/c of HYDROstatic pressure
Facilitated diffusion
Passive transport. Particles from HIGH to LOW concentration with help of protein.
Active transport pump
Particles pumped from LOW to HIGH
Part of active transport.
Phagocytosis
LARGE PARTICLES trapped in plasma & brought into cell
Part of active transport.
Pinocytosis
FLUID & DISSOLVED PARTICLES trapped in plasma & brought into cell
Part of active transport.
Exocytosis
Proteins & cell proteins move out. Part of active transport.
mRNA
brings message from DNA (to make new protein)
tRNA
transfers amino acids (building blocks of protein)
rRNA
combines amino acids into proteins
4 Phases of Mitosis
- Prophase
- Metaphase
- Anaphase
- Telophase
Characteristics of Epithelial cells
tightly packed cells covering bodies surface and organs. Also form some glands
Epithelial tissue is classed by shape in to 3
squamous (scale)
cubodal (cube)
columnar (column)
Epithelial tissue can also be classified by 2 cell layers (s + s)
simple (every cell touches membrane)
stratified (cells are layered)
EXOcrine glands
secreto to ducts that empty to body surface or cavity
ENDOcrine glands
secrete hormones INTO blood
3 types of FIBERS in connective tissue
- collagenous
- reticular
- elastic
4 types of connective tissue
- fibrous tissue (loose or dense)
- cartilage
- bone
- blood
LOOSE Fibrous connective tissue t includes (AAR)
areolar (collagar and elastin)
adipose (fat cells)
Reticular
DENSE fibrous connective tissue includes
1 tendons
2. ligaments
3. fascia
3 types of cartilage
hyaline
elastic
fibro
Bone cells are called
osteocytes
Blood is unique to other liquids b/c it also contains
plasma
Neuroglia
nervous tissue that protects and assists neurons
Neurons
nervous tissue that conducts the nerve impusles (soma, dendrites, axon)
3 types of muscle tissue
- skeletal
- cardiac
- smooth
tissue repair done in 2 ways
- regeneration
- fibrosis (scar tissue)
Ephithelial membranes
cutaneous (skin)
Mucous membranes
line exterior, lubricate digestion, trap dust, protect cells
Serous membranes are p____ and v_____ and p_ P_ p+
pareital (lines walls of cavity)
visceral - covers organs
periTONEum - abdominal area
periCARDIum - heart area
pLeUIra - lung
