3c Cells & Tissues & Membranes Flashcards
Diffusion
A passive transport. Particles from HIGH to LOW concentration
Osmosis
A passive transport.
Water goes
FROM LOW (solute) (but HIGH water)
TO
HIGH (solute) and LOW water.
Filtration
Passive transport.
WATER & solutes move through membrane b/c of HYDROstatic pressure
Facilitated diffusion
Passive transport. Particles from HIGH to LOW concentration with help of protein.
Active transport pump
Particles pumped from LOW to HIGH
Part of active transport.
Phagocytosis
LARGE PARTICLES trapped in plasma & brought into cell
Part of active transport.
Pinocytosis
FLUID & DISSOLVED PARTICLES trapped in plasma & brought into cell
Part of active transport.
Exocytosis
Proteins & cell proteins move out. Part of active transport.
mRNA
brings message from DNA (to make new protein)
tRNA
transfers amino acids (building blocks of protein)
rRNA
combines amino acids into proteins
4 Phases of Mitosis
- Prophase
- Metaphase
- Anaphase
- Telophase
Characteristics of Epithelial cells
tightly packed cells covering bodies surface and organs. Also form some glands
Epithelial tissue is classed by shape in to 3
squamous (scale)
cubodal (cube)
columnar (column)
Epithelial tissue can also be classified by 2 cell layers (s + s)
simple (every cell touches membrane)
stratified (cells are layered)
