#38. Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). Flashcards
1
Q
What is RETINOPATHY of PREMATURITY?
A
- A RETINAL DISORDER that attributes to the DISURPTION of NORMAL DEVELOPMENT of the RETINAL Vasculature
- IN Pre-term Infants
- With Birth Weight LESS THAN «_space;2500g
2
Q
What are the STAGES of ROP?
A
Stage 1 = DEMARCATION
- Border BTW Vascularised + Non-Vascularised Retina
Stage 2 = FORMATION of RIDGE
- DEVELOPING the INTRARETINAL Proliferative Tissue
Stage 3 = Ridge WITH EXTRARETINAL Proliferation
Stage 4 = SUBTOTAL Retinal DETACHMENT
Stage 5 = TOTAL Retinal DETACHMENT
3
Q
What is the EPIDEMIOLOGY of ROP?
A
- Disorder is RARE
- Infants with Birth Weight BELOW «_space;1000g are at HIGH RISK of developing this disorder
- NOT ALWAYS Preventable, DESPITE the OPTIMUM Care + Strict MONITORING of PARTIAL Pa of O2
4
Q
What are the CAUSES of ROP?
A
- Pre-Term Birth
- Exposure to Oxygen, DISTURBS Normal Development of Retinal Vasculature
- Vessel OBLITERATION causing Vitreous Haemorrhage / Retinal Detachment / Late Scarring Stage
5
Q
What are the SYMPTOMS of ROP?
A
- Vitreous Haemorrhage
- Retinal Detachment
- Secondary Strabismus
6
Q
What are the DIFFERENTIAL DIAGNOSIS of ROP?
A
- Retinoblastoma
- Cataract
7
Q
What is the TREATMENT for ROP?
A
Stage 3 = Ridge WITH EXTRARETINAL Proliferation
0 LASER PHOTOCOAUGULATION
0 CRYOTHERAPY in the Non-Vascularised Part
