3.7.4.2 Investigating populations Flashcards
1
Q
What are the 3 methods of sampling?
A
- mark-release-recapture
- random sampling
- systematic sampling
2
Q
What does mark-release-recapture measure?
A
abundance/ population estimate of motile organisms
3
Q
population estimate calculation
A
N = (total sample 1)(total sample 2) / number marked in sample 2
4
Q
What assumptions are made with mark release recapture method?
A
- no changes in population side due to births, deaths / migration (this one VERY IMPORTANT)
- mark is still visible
- marked sample has had enough time to remix in its population
- marking hasn’t impacted the individuals’ chance of survival
5
Q
What do quadrats measure?
A
number and distribution of non motile organisms
6
Q
3 methods of using quadrats
A
- count
- % cover
- % frequency / abundance
7
Q
What is random sampling used for?
A
to estimate population size
8
Q
method for random sampling
A
- divide area into grid, assign each square coordinates
- use random number generator (AVOIDS BIAS)
- use numbers as coordinates to place the quadrat
- estimate % cover, count organisms & indicate if organism is present or not
- repeat with LARGE (v important to say this) number of quadrats so representative and reliable
9
Q
What is systematic / transect sampling used for?
A
for distribution across and environmental change (succession)
10
Q
Method for systematic sampling
A
Method for systematic sampling
