3.7.1.1 Inheritance Flashcards
Define dominant gene
An allele whose phenotype is always expressed
Define recessive gene
An allele whose phenotype only appears if both copies of the gene are present
Define carrier
A person carrying an allele which is not expressed in the phenotype but can be passed to offspring
Define F1 generation
The offspring of 2 homozygous individuals (F1 gen will be heterozygous)
Define F2 generation
The offspring of the F1 generation interbreeding
Define monohybrid inheritance
The inheritance of a characteristic controlled by a single gene
What is co-dominance? & example
- Both alleles are expressed in the phenotype
- No recessive alleles
- Given an intermediate phenotype
- e.g. Sickle cell anaemia
What does multiple alleles mean?
Genes with more than 2 possible alleles within a population
Define dihybrid inheritance
The simultaneous inheritance of two characteristics
