3.7.1 inheritance Flashcards
3.7.1 inheritance
what are the 4 ways of inheritance
1) monohybrid
2) di hybrid
3) sex linkage
4) co-dominiant
what does F1 and F2 mean
F1 means that it is the first generation
F2 is the second generation
what is the definition of Genotype
describes the alleles that an organism has and is respresented by a single letter for each allele
what is the definition of phenotype
is the appearance of an organism by its genotype
what is the definiton of a ressesive allele
this is the allele will only be expressed in the phenotype when there are 2 ressesive alleles
what is the definition of a dominiant allele
Dominant allele – The allele that is always expressed in the phenotype e.g. T for tall
what is the definition of genetics
Genetics – The study of inheritance, controlled by genes
what is the definition of genome
Genome – The total genetic make up of an organism.
what is the definition of gene
Gene - A section of DNA on a chromosome coding for a particular polypeptide. They can separate and combine, they can mutate.
what is the definition of locus
locus – The position of a particular gene on a chromosome.
what is the definiton of allele
Allele – Different forms of the same gene.
what is the definition of homologous chromosome
Homologous chromosome – a pair of chromosomes, one maternal and one paternal, that have the same gene loci
what is monohybrid crosses
Monohybrid inheritance – Involves the inheritance of a single characteristic (2 alleles involving a single gene)
what is dihybrid inheritance
Dihybrid inheritance – Involves the inheritance of two separate genes.
what is codominace
Codominance – Where the heterozygous individual has a phenotype intermediate between the two homozygous parents.
