3.1.3 Lipids Flashcards
Draw out the structure of a lipid
Check it online
What happens when you mix lipids with water
They are in insoluble in water
Lipids are nonpolar .
They are hydrophobic
What is the carbon area of the lipid called
A triglyceride
What is the effect of double bonds in a fatty acid chain
Takes up more space so less effect from London forces
Therefore this reduces melting point
What are the different types of fatty acids and give a breaf description of each
Saturated - has no double bonds , has max hydrogens bonded
Monounsaturated- has only one double bond.
Polyunsaturated- has more than one double bond
Omega 3/6 - double bonds start after the 3/6 carbon
Forming a ester bond is called
Esterification
What type of reaction is esterification
A condensation reaction
Name three features of saturated lipids
Has single bonds between carbons and is fully saturated with hydrogens
Strong attraction between chains
Closely packed so has high boiling and melting temperature
name three features about unsaturated lipids
Has double bonds and are unsaturated
Link does not allow for optimal storage therefor has low melting and boiling point
Kinks mean that they have low attraction between chains
Describe lipids role in water proofing
Hydrophobic so repels water and can act as a barrier e.g cutical in plants upper epidermis
Describe lipids role in thermal insulation
Provide thermal insulation from the extra layers
Describe lipids roles in protection
Reduces blunt force by spreading the impact across the adipose tissue reducing damage to organs
Describe a test for lipids
- Mix test substance to ethanol
2.shake
3.add water
4.milky colour indicates lipids
