37. Teschovirus encephalomyelitis. Flashcards
Teschovirus Encephalomyelitis:
- Order
- Family
- Order: Picornavirales
- Family: Picornaviridae
“RNA” because of its ssRNA genome
Virus names within the family of Picornaviridae
- Enterovirus
- Hepatovirus
- Avihepatovirus
- Teschovirus
- Tremovirus
Picornaviridae family: General pathogenesis
PO → Asymptomatic replication in the gut → viraemia
Are Picornaviridae viruses stenoxen or euryxen?
Stenoxen
Teschovirus Encephalomyelitis is known by what other name?
Porcine Enteroviral Encephalomyelitis
Teschovirus Encephalomyelitis: Variants
- Teschen (more severe)
- Talfan (milder & asymptomatic)
Teschovirus Encephalomyelitis: Occurrence of Teschen variant
Endemic in middle-Europe & Madagascar
Teschovirus Encephalomyelitis: Occurrence of Talfan variant
Europe, America & Australia
Teschovirus encephalomyelitis: Causing agent
Porcine Teschovirus Serotype 1 (PTV-1)
Teschovirus encephalomyelitis: Serotypes
- Serotype 1 = Very significant
- Serotypes 2 → 11 = Mild symptoms
Teschovirus encephalomyelitis: Epidemiology
NOTIFIABLE DISEASE
- Only pigs are susceptible (stenoxen)
- Teschen: All age groups
- Talfan: <4mo of age
- Resistant in the environment for 3 weeks
Teschovirus encephalomyelitis: Pathogenesis
2 different pathways:
- PO infection→ Enteral phase → Viraemia → Fever; Depression; Anorexia
- Nasal infection → Olfactory nerves → CNS → Meningitis; Encephalomyelitis; CNS signs
Teschovirus encephalomyelitis: Enteral phase
- GI epithelium: Primary infection
- Asymptomatic infection is frequent. Seroconversion & shedding.
- Local immunity & end of virus shedding
Teschovirus encephalomyelitis: Incubation & CSx (Teschen)
Incubation time: 1-4 weeks
- Mild fever & anorexia
- Piglet/grower: Vomiting, ataxia, convulsions & flaccid paralysis
- Adult: Flaccid HL paralysis
Some animals may recover but CSx still remain
Teschovirus encephalomyelitis: CSx (Talfan)
- Ataxia, HL paralysis & opisthotonus
- Coma & death after 3 days
After recovery, ataxia may remain
