3.6 Flashcards
what is a metabolic pathway
a series of chemical reactions that start with a substrate and finish with an end product
define a anabolic pathway
build up of large molecules from small molecules requiring energy
define a catabolic reaction
breakdown of large molecules into small molecules releasing energy
give an example of an anabolic reaction
protein synthesis
give an example of a catabolic reaction
respiration
what is enzyme action controlled by
the presence or absence of particular enzymes
what is an induced fit
the active site changes shape slightly to better fit the substrate after it binds
what is the activation energy
the amount of energy needed to make a reaction happen
what happens when the substrate concentration increases
the enzyme reaction increases until the saturation points when it remains constant
what is competitive inhibitors
they bind at the active site preventing the substrate from binding , it can be reversed by increasing substrate concentration
what is non competitive inhibition
they bind away from the active site changing the shape of the active site preventing the substrate binding , it cannot be reversed
what is feedback inhibition
it occurs when the end product in the pathway reaches a critical concentration . it inhibits an earlier enzyme stopping further production , it stops when concentration has declined
