Begin with assessment of learner needs and characteristics
- motivation: need to, want to, or may already know?
- ability: health, literacy, sensory deficits, psychomotor skills, pain, anxiety, growth and development stage, memory
- leading questions, open ended so learner can set goals/priorities
- consider the environment
- identify resources and refer prn
- build on previous experience and knowledge
- actively involve learner and allow application
