3.4 - Tourism Flashcards
Name 4 types of tourism:
-historic (old buildings/archaelogical)
-landscape (eg Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONBs))
-climate (guaranteed conditions for events like winter sports)
-wildlife (eg endemic species)
Why has the tourism industry grown so fast? Name 5 reasons:
-relaxation of border control in areas like the EU (no need for passports to cross borders within EU)
-more wealth and so more disposable income (money left after spending on essentials)
-people take longer holidays
-improved communications + advertisements of holidays on internet
-transport is cheaper and can travel further more easily (due to planes)
Give some economical advantages of tourism:
-brings in revenue for local businesses (can be taxed to improve local area)
-creates lots of jobs
-encourages growth/urbanisation in the area (benefits the locals due to improved transport/healthcare/food services)
How does an increase in tourism lead to the development of the country’s infrastructure?
-more tourists means more money brought in, increases economy
-airports/roads/public transport needs to be improved for ease of mobility
-make more shops for them to buy things from
-electricity/water/gas needs to be provided for hotels/villas
-health care needs to be improved
-all used to attract more tourists for more income
How does tourism negatively impact an area?
-environmental damage (visual/air pollution, littering, infrastructure built, noise)
-traffic congestion
-crime
-increased strain on services only during peak seasons, and less during low season (area may become derelict and less popular)
What is the difference between a physical and human landscape?
-physical refers to the natural aspects (beaches/weather)
-human refers to manmade things (buildings/roads/restaurants)
Explain how the human landscape can also attract tourists to an area:
-tourists are attracted by things which they can’t see where they live (eg castles/monuments/culturally important things)
-shops allow tourists to get souvenirs and other things
-restaurants will be an attraction
-hotels will be an attraction so tourists can live somewhere
-theme parks for entertainment
Why does tourism need to be carefully managed to maintain its sustainability?
-dependence on tourism-related income could backfire due to natural disasters causing major disruption
-lots of money needs to be spent on preserving environment if that is the reason for increased tourism (less would go to the locals)
