How do you give a 6 figure grid reference?
-find 4 figure grid reference first
-find the fraction of the distance it is along in both x and y direction
-round the fraction’s decimal to 1 d.p. and use the corresponding decimals for the x and y 6 figure grid reference
What are northings and eastings?
How big are the squares for the 2 types of scales in real life and on the map?
-each square length represents 1km long in both scales
1:25,000 uses 4cm squares
1:50,000 uses 2cm squares
Just remember that the numbers must multiply to 100,000cm
How do you take a 16-point compass reading?
-note the directions it is between, and take one of the main cardinal directions to be first
-add on the 8-point direction after
How do you take a 4 figure grid reference?
-take the 1st reading from the eastings, and use the easting to the west of your point
-take the 2nd reading from the northings, and use the northing to the south of your point
-combine the numbers with the first reading first
What is a cross section?
The ones from Paper 2
a to-scale line graphs that show a side-on view of the landscape between 2 grid reference points
What general features might explain why a town has grown?
-woodlands for fuel
-relief (concave/convex slopes, altitude)
-roads/railways/rivers
-sightseeing locations
-tourism

When asked to describe the drainage in an area, what can you talk about?
-rivers (name of it, where it flows, width)
-tributaries/confluences
-marshes/ponds/lakes (say if they are big or small)

-20-mark map question
-5 8-mark data response questions
What are the 3 types of slope?
What is the aspect of a slope?
-the orientation it is in
-eg if the slope faces South, then its aspect is South
If asked for an 8-point compass reading, how many letters should you be writing?
-ONLY 2 NOT 3
-3 is for a 16-point compass
8 - NW, SE, SW, etc
16 - NNW, ENE, SSW, etc
