3.3 Lipids Flashcards
Lipids
diverse group of compounds that are largely nonpolar in nature
triacylglycerols or triglyceride
fancy name for fat (stored energy)
saturated fatty acid
saturated with hydrogen.
In other words, the number of hydrogen atoms attached to the carbon skeleton is maximized. (H is maxed out)
trans fat
hydrogen atoms are on two different planes in the configuration of the molecule around the double bond
Omega fat
polyunsaturated fatty acids the body needs
(numbering the carbon omega starts from the
methyl end or the end that is farthest from the carboxylic
end)
Wax
hydrophobic nature , found on aquatic birds
Phospholipids
major plasma membrane constituents that comprise cells’ outermost layer
steroids
have a fused ring structure (all have four linked carbon rings)
hydrophobic and insoluble in water
-sterols cuz OH f.g.
