Define devience
Behaviour that falls outside the norms or what is thought to be acceptable; goes against the moral values or laws of the sport.
Define sportsmanship
Qualities of fairness, following the rules, being gracious in defeat
Define gamesmanship
Bending the rules/laws of a sport without actually breaking them
Give three examples of deviance in sport
Taking performance enhancing drugs
Diving in the penalty area in football
Pushing someone when the referee isn’t looking in rugby
Give three examples of sportsmanship
Shaking hands with the opposition at the end of a match
Kicking/throwing the ball off the sideline if someone is injured to stop the game
Helping a player from another team if they have cramp
Applauding another team scoring in netball
Give three examples of gamesmanship
Time wasting towards the end of a match if winning
Making comments to the other team
Claiming a catch in cricket when you know the ball touched the ground
Professional fouls
What is a professional foul?
When a player deliberately commits a foul to prevent the opposition scoring.
E.g. Poor tackle in rugby or football to prevent a try or goal. The defender may do this if they are confident the player will score otherwise. In rugby this may result in a penalty try being given without the player actually scoring it.
Give three consequences of deviance?
Carded - yellow or red card
Banned from sport
Dropped from team/squad
Sponsors may withdraw funding
Why might a player demonstrate gamesmanship or deviance?
Pressure to win - coach, teammates, sponsor
Maintain reputation
What is match fixing?
When a player purposely loses a game for financial reward. E.g. a goal keeper missing a save on purpose. Also known as throwing a match
Why might a performer carry out the act of match fixing?
Offered money
