2.2 The use of goal setting and SMART targets to improve and/pr optimise performance Flashcards
What does SMART stand for?
Specific Measurable Achievable Realistic Time bound
Why is it beneficial for a performer to set a target or goal?
Give a focus Helps with motivations Monitor how well you are doing Give you something to aim for Know when you have achieved a goal
Why is it important that a goal/target is specific?
You know exactly what it is you are trying to achieve
Why is it important that a goal/target is measurable?
You know when you have achieved your target
Why is it important that a goal/target is achievable?
Goals should stretch a person but they must be able to achieve them otherwise they may become demotivated and stop training
Why is it important that a goal/target is realistic?
You have to be able to achieve the goal in practice. You need to have the time and resources to complete it
Why is it important that a goal/target is time bound?
If there is no time limit it is easy to put off training and therefore achieving it.
How can fitness tests help a person set a target for their PEP?
Identifies components of fitness that require improvement
Gives quantitative data to set a realistic and measurable target
Why is it important to review targets regularly?
Once training has started might find progress is faster or slower than expected. The PEP would then need to be adjusted accordingly.
