2.3 Guidance and feedback on performance Flashcards
What are the four types of guidance?
Visual
Verbal
Manual
Mechanical
What is visual guidance?
This is where the performer is shown how the skill should be performed
Give three examples of visual guidance
Demonstration
Video of performer doing the skill
Photographs or images of performer doing the skill
What is verbal guidance?
This is where the performer is told what to do
What is manual guidance?
This is where the coach physically helps the performer to complete the skill
Give two examples of manual guidance
Coach holding the racket arm of a tennis player to get them to move their racket correctly
A coach supporting a performer on a trampoline when learning a somersault
What is mechanical guidance?
A coach using equipment to support an athlete
Give two example of mechanical guidance
A rig in trampolining
Coaching belts in gymnastics
Tackle pads in rugby
What are the advantages of visual guidance?
Knows what the skill should look like
What are the disadvantages of visual guidance?
If in the form of the video cannot ask questions
If a poor demonstration is given the skill could be learnt incorrectly
What are the advantages of verbal guidance?
The coach can explain in detail
Can give the performer guidance whilst they are completing the skills
Can be used during competition
What are the disadvantages of verbal guidance?
Difficult for beginners to understand
Can’t always be hear
What are the advantages of manual guidance?
The performer can get a feel of what the skill should be like
Increase the safety of skills that may not be safe for a performer to try independently
What are the disadvantages of manual guidance?
Performer can become reliant on the support
Not possible for a lot of sports
What are the advantages of mechanical guidance?
The performer can get a feel of what the skill should be like
Increase the safety of skills that may not be safe for a performer to try independently
What are the disadvantages of mechanical guidance?
Performer can become reliant on the support
Not possible for a lot of sports
What is quantitative data?
Information about quantities, which can be measured. Eg. distances, times, shot on target
What is qualitative data?
Information about qualities, difficult to measure. For example how hard an athlete felt they were working
What are the four types of feedback?
Intrinsic
Extrinsic
Terminal
Concurrent
What is intrinsic feedback?
Feedback that comes form the performer themselves
What is extrinsic feedback?
Feedback that comes form an outside source such as a coach or teacher
What is terminal feedback?
Feedback given at the end of a training session or a game
What is concurrent feedback?
Feedback that is given at the time of performance. E.g. a coach on the side of a football pitch
Why might a novice performer struggle to provide intrinsic feedback?
They have little knowledge of the skill so cannot assess their performance
Why is intrinsic feedback important?
Self reflection allows a person to improve. It is important this is positive as well as constructive.
Why is extrinsic feedback important?
Allows the performer to remain motivate them.
Allows them to know what they need to do to improve
How might extrinsic feedback from teammates increase a players motivation and confidence?
If teammates congratulate and support the player they player will then feel valued and continue to play.
What is the benefit of concurrent feedback?
It can be acted on immediately
What is the benefit of terminal feedback?
Can give an overview of the whole performance/game
How might data be used by a coach to provide feedback?
It provides evidence to the performer
Identifies areas of strengths and areas for improvement
