3.3 Compound Events Flashcards
1
Q
Union
A
two events in the event consisting of all outcomes that are contained in either of two events denoted E1 or E2
2
Q
Intersection
A
two events in the event consisting of all outcomes that contained in both of two events E1 and E2
3
Q
Mutually Exclusive Events
A
two events that have no outcomes in common, cannot occur simultaneously, P=(A U B) is P(A) + P(B)
4
Q
Non mutually exclusive events
A
When finding the union you need to not count the shared outcomes more than once,
P(A or B)= P(A)+P(B)-P(A and B)
5
Q
Finding a union (addition rule)
A
P(A U B)= P(B)+P(A)-P(A n B)
If events are mutually exclusive,
P(A U B)= P(B)+P(A)
