Purpose of take home vehicles
Promote greater security by having high visibility
To increase personal contacts with citizens fostering a better relationship
To deter crime
Increase response times to and from work
Reduce the maintenance cost of vehicles
To provide quicker response of off duty personnel who are called back into work
Increase morale
Who is responsible for issuing and maintaining county vehicles?
Fleet operations supervisor.
Upon finding a dirty car can send an email to division commander who can have take home privileges suspended
Who gets issued a vehicle?
All sworn members of the department in an enforcement related role.
Anyone who uses vehicles frequently may have one issued at the discretion of the chief of police
What will officers do when issued a vehicle?
Log on to Ess and complete a vehicle authorization form that expires 12/31
How long will officers assigned a new vehicle have it for?
Until it is no longer serviceable or until the member transfers to a unit that requires a different vehicle.
Only a division or bureau commander can amend this policy
How are new vehicles assigned?
To members who have the worst cars first. Then seniority.
When can the county vehicle be driven?
To and from work. Part time jobs, county approved overtime, to and from the gym immediately before or after shift
County take home distance from the county policy
No more then 15 miles from the county line straight line distance.
If beyond 15 miles, must leave the vehicle parked and locked in the closest police or fire station that is operated 24/7 to the officers home.
Exceptions to the take home policy
Members who are on call and members in command staff positions.
Members who live more then 15 miles out can with permission via memo can take the car for cleaning or training.
What should officers do if a county car is being driven contrary to state laws?
Stop the vehicle. Notify watch commander, who will notify the division commander.
If corrective action can’t be taken immediately, the officer will follow the supervisor to headquarters where discipline will be handed out
Special privileges with a police vehicle while off duty
Will not park patrol vehicles in restricted areas or abuse the privilege
Can a police vehicle tow another police vehicle?

Once a week

Before every shift

Twice a week at least. Older models may require more
