3.2 Virtualisation Flashcards
What is virtualisation?
Virtualisation is the creation of a virtual version of a device, software or server.
What is a server and storage virtualisation ?
Server : When one physical server runs multiple virtual servers.
Storage : when multiple physical storage devices form one virtual storage device.
What are virtualisation benefits and drawbacks?
A virtual client is a full desktop environment but processing happens via the hyper visor.
Benefits :
- hardware is more efficiently used
- cheaper as money is saved by not buying physical devices as well as less power consumption
- programmes can be tested before on main computer
Drawbacks :
- initial set up is complex and more technical knowledge is required
- if one single system fails, the impact will be greater
- fewer servers do more work so it may impact performance
What is cloud technology and the three types?
Cloud technology is storage that is accessed through a network primarily the internet and is a form of virtualisation as storage is virtually held in an offsite location.
Three Types :
Private cloud : When a business has its own data centre that can be accessed by employees.
Public cloud : Uses a service providers such as Onedrive to provide storage over the internet.
Hybrid : A mix of private cloud and public cloud services. Businesses can move workloads between public and private cloud. More flexibility and data storage options.
