What is a server?
A powerful dedicated system that provides a service to other programmes and devices. It requires more memory, storage, and processing power than regular computers.
What is a file server?
A file server centrally stores files so that other systems on the network can access them. The server has access security meaning only certain users have access to files.
What is a printing server ?
This type of server controls printing jobs and manage printing requests by sending documents to an appropriate printer. Useful when there is a queue or budgets.
What is an application server?
An application server allows access to application on a network. All users are able to access certain applications but the server restricts other applications to those with invalid access levels.
What is a database server?
A database server manages / hosts a database. Data held on the server is stored on a database which can be accessed from connected computers.
What is a web server?
A web server allows clients to request and receive webpages through HTTP/S. It also hosts websites.
What is a mail server?
A mail server sends and receive emails using email protocols allowing email communication between other mail servers on other networks.
What is a hyper visor?
A hyper visor is a type of server that can create multiple virtual machines. Hypervisors use one physical host system to provide access to multiple guest systems. The hyper visor allocates resources from the hosts hardware to each of the guest virtual machines.
