3.2 - Plant and animal breeding Flashcards
Why do plant and animal breeders try to improve characteristics?
To provide a sustainable food source
Why are plant field trials carried out in a range of different environments?
To compare the performance of different cultivars or treatments and to evaluate GM crops
What does the selection of treatments ensure?
It ensures valid comparisons
What does the number of replicates take account of?
The variability within the sample
what does the randomisation of treatments allow?
It allows the bias to be eliminated when measuring treatment effects
What is a Cultivar?
- A cultivar is a plant that has been created or selected intentionally for desirable characteristics that can be maintained by cultivation
- A cultivar is different from others in at least one characteristic or trait
Why are selected related plants and animals bred for several generations in inbreeding?
so that till the population breeds true to the desired type which is due to the elimination of heterozygotes
What can a result of inbreeding be?
An increase in the frequency of individuals who are homozygous for recessive deleterious alleles
