1.8 - Genomic Sequencing Flashcards
What is Genomic sequencing used for?
It is used for the comparison of genomes from different species
What are required to compare sequence data?
Too compare sequence data, computers and statistical analyses (bioinformatics) are required
What is Phylogenetics?
The study of evolutionary history and relationships
What can sequence data and fossil evidence be used for?
Can be used to determine the main sequence of events in the evolution of life:
-Last universal ancestor
-Photosynthetic organisms
-Multicellularity
-Animals
-Vertebrates
-Land plants
What are the 3 domains of life?
Bacteria, Archaea and Eukaryotes
What are molecular clocks used to show?
They are used to show when species diverged during evolution
What is the problem with molecular clocks?
They assume constant mutation rate
What can an individual genomes be used to predict?
The likelihood of developing certain diseases
What is Pharmacogenetics?
The us of genome information in the choice of drugs
