Q

What happened at the docklands?

A

Processing from abroad, area not used, Cranes used, boats became bigger and couldn’t fit, hand unloading no longer needed, BRICS and Asian growth reduced manufacturing, 12k jobs lost, 60% of men in London unemployed

Docklands was a large port with houses, flats and jobs sending container ships downstream. It needed regeneration as it could not hold modern container ships, creating high unemployment and encourage investment. There was poor housing, derelict land, contaminated land, and poor transport.

Canary Wharf was made, HSNC and O2 built, transport links made, 200k trees planted, £100m invested. Area was turned into an enterprise zone with high value residency and commercial and industrial projects. It now has 80000 residents with enterprise commercial districts, industry, offices etc. Has private investors, banks, offices, British waterways, local authority.
