3.1.8 inorganic ions Flashcards
1
Q
What are the functions of hydrogen ions?
A
Determine pH of solution and affect enzyme concentration (increased hydrogen ion concentration decreased pH)
2
Q
What are the function of phosphate ions?
A
- Joins nucleotides in phosphodiester bond of DNA
- Used to make ATP and DNA
- Phosphorylates other molecules to make them more reactive
- Hydrophilic part of phospholipid bilayer
- Affects water potential/osmosis
3
Q
What are the functions of sodium ions?
A
- Role in co-transport of glucose and amino acids into cells
- Because they are actively transported out of cells by sodium potassium pump
- Creates a sodium concentration gradient
- Affects water potential/ osmosis
4
Q
What is the function of iron ions?
A
Component of haemoglobin- associates with oxygen/ transports oxygen
