3.1.6 ATP Flashcards
What is adenosine triphosphate made up of?
Ribose (pentose sugar)
Adenine (nitrogenous base)
3 phosphate groups
What is ATP?
An immediate source of energy in a cell
What is the hydrolysis of ATP?
ATP + water → ADP + Pi + energy
What is the use of ATP hydrolysis?
Could be coupled to energy-requiring reactions within cells
Inorganic phosphate released could be used to phosphorylate other compounds - making them more reactive
How is ADP and Pi resynthesised back to ATP?
Using enzyme - ATP synthase in a condensation reaction
What enzyme is used in ATP hydrolysis?
ATP hydrolase
What energy-requiring processes in cells are ATP used in?
Metabolic processes
Movement
Active transport
Secretion
Activation of molecules
What is the inorganic phosphate (released in ATP hydrolysis) used in?
To phosphorylate other reactions, making them more reactive
