Q

How to draw the ionic lattice structure?

A

Minimum 4 ions shown in 2D square arrangement. Each ion forms bond only with those of opposite charge.

Q

Why do ionic compounds have high melting/boiling points?

A

Strong attraction between oppositely charged ions which takes lots of energy to break

Q

Why are ionic compounds soluble in water?

A

Polar molecules have a partial negative charge on one end and a partial positive charge on the other end. The charges of polar molecules pull the ions away from the lattice and makes them dissolve.
Ionic compounds are insoluble in non-polar solvents
