Q

silent mutation

A

change in base sequence has no effect on amino acid produced

bcos genetic code has multiple codons (triplets) for the same amino acid

Q

missense mutation

A

change in base sequence cause 1 different amino acid to be produced

result: polypeptide formed might work differently or not at all

Q

3 causes of mutations

A
  1. due to fast enzymatic process of DNA replication mechanism….so result in error
  2. exposure to radiation and some chemicals (mutagens!)
  3. base substitution- where 1 base in the sequence of a gene is replaced by a different base
