3.1.1.1 Natural hazards Flashcards
natural hazard definition
a natural event that has an impact on people and human activities
types of natural hazards
atmospheric, geological, flooding
atmospheric
air
geological
earth
flooding
water
examples of atmospheric hazards
cyclone, hurricanes, thunderstorm, drought
examples of geological hazards
landslide, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis, earthquakes
examples of flooding hazards
floods
hazard risk definition
the likelihood of being affected by a natural event
factors affecting risk
urbanisation, poverty, climate change, farming
human factors affecting risks
urbanisation, poverty, farming
environmental factors affecting risk
farming, climate change
urbanisation
the growth of towns and cities, increase the risk of hazards as more people would be affected (50% of people live in towns and cities), there are more buildings closer together so if they collapse it would have a domino effect
poverty
extremely poor, may force people to live in areas of risk (side of mountains) which has a high land slide risk, houses would be less stable and collapse easier trapping people, no healthcare benefits to recover, harder to evacuate as densely populated
climate change
change in the worlds weather patterns, when the weather is warmer the atmosphere has more energy leading to more extreme storms, some parts of the world becomes wetter with flooding more likely, other areas are dryer so droughts are more likely
