What is a megacity?
A megacity is a city which has a population of 10 million people.
How many megacities will there be from 2014 to 2030?
In 2014, there were 28 and by 2030 there will be 41 megacities.
Where will most of the megacities be and give an example?
The most megacities will be in emerging countries and developing countries. India is an example of this.
Why is London a megacity even though it has a population of 8.6 million?
This is because of the built up nature of the city suburbs.
What is predicted to happen to urbanisation in 2050?
By 2050, the majority of people in every global region are predicted to live in urban areas.
What was the state of megacities in 1950?
The largest cities were in developed countries. At that time there were only two megacities. Tokyo and New York.
What are primary cities?
Primary cities do a lot of economic activities. London and New York are the world’s largest financial centres. Trillions of US dollars come through London each year.
How were the Urbanisation rates in the past?
In the past before 1980, urbanisation was very fast. Developing countries urbanise slowly, they increased by 10%.
What was the urbanisation rates like in the present?
After 1980 till 2020, the urbanisation rate sped up by 15%.
What was the urbanisation rate like in the future?
After 2020, the rates of urbanisations will slow down a bit and continue to increase by 10%.
Who are decision makers?
Decision makers are in TNC headquarters. They decide what they produce, sell and where the economic activity occurs.
Where are most of the TNC headquarters located?
80% of the worlds largest companies have headquarters in USA, EU and Japan.
How much is Asia expected to urbanise?
It is predicted that Asia would urbanise to 64% by 2050.
What are the actual causes of growth?
The fact that people are moving to cities and there is a higher birth rate than death rate.
What will happen to Europe in 2030?
It will have the least number of megacities and the slowest growth in its cities.
