3.1 - Lecture - Epithelia/Cell Morphology Flashcards
1
Q
Simple Squamous epithelium
A
- uncommon except for:
A) endothelium (lining vasculature)
B) mesothelium (epithelium of a serosa)
2
Q
Epithelium
A
- sheet of cells that has a polarity, apical surface (towards lumen) and basal surface (towards a basement membrane interface with connective tissue)
- epithelial cell membrane can be divided into apical, lateral, and basal domains based on cell’s position relative to the epithelium
3
Q
Simple Cuboidal Epithelium
A
found in the ducts of some glands
4
Q
Simple Columnar Epithelium
A
- very common, especially in endotehlium-derived tissues
-
5
Q
Stratified Squamous Epithelium
A
- very very common
- Divided into keratinized (skin) + non-keratinized (lining wet mucosa)
6
Q
Stratified Cuboidal Epithelium
A
Duct of eccrine sweat gland is the ONLY common place these are found
7
Q
Stratified Columnar Epithelium
A
- uncommon
- found on certain portions of the eyelid
8
Q
Pseudostratified epithelium
A
- containing cell types of multiple shapes
- still one layer thick (all cells contact basement membrane, but may not appear to)
- commonly found in trachea (called the respiratory epithelium)
- also may be found in male reproductive organs
9
Q
Respiratory Epithelium
A
the name for the pseudostratified epithelium inside the trachea
10
Q
Transitional Epithelium
A
- stratified epithelium that reduces to fewer layers whens stretched (all cells contact basement membrane)
- also referred to as urinary epithelium
- ONLY found in urinary system
