1.2 (Lab) - Histological Terminology Flashcards
Terminology of Lab 1.2
Typical organ is composed of? (2 things)
mucosa and a wall
a mucosa is general (anatomical) term for?
lining tissues of any of the wet surfaces of the body
oral cavity, gi tract, vagina, urinary tract, respiratory tract, etc.
if the organ wall ends in a space, the outer layer is termed ____
serosa
if the organ wall blends with connective tissue to another structure, it is termed ____
adventitia
What are the three layers of the mucosa (inner most to outer most) ?
epithelium, then the lamina propria, then muscularis mucosae
the epithelium layer is made up of which type of tissue?
epithelial tissue (lining the lumen of the organ)
lamina propria is made up of (predominantly) which type of tissue?
subjacent connective tissue
the muscularis muscosae is made up of (predominantly) what type of tissue?
smooth muscle
what is the layer beneath the mucosa and what type of tissue is it comprised of?
Submuscosa, made of connective tissue
what are the two terms for the muscle layer of the organ itself? and how does the naming of this layer change depending on if the muscularis mucosae is present?
it is called the muscularis (or muscularis propria) or muscularis externa.
It will be called the muscularis ( or muscularis propria) if the muscularis mucosae is absent
Or it will be called the muscularis externa if the muscularis mucosae is present
What are the two layers of the muscularis externa (inside to outside)?
Inner circular layer (ICL) followed by the Outer Longitudinal layer (OLL)
What are artefacts?
things that appear in the section as a result of the preparation technique + do not indicate anything about the in vivo state of the specimen
what are five examples of artefacts
cut surfaces, differential shrinkage of tissue, incomplete perfusion, folds, tears, dust, etc.
What is the color appearance of unstained tissue
translucent or perhaps slightly yellow
what is the approx. limit of resolution for a LM ?
1 micron
